The highway is a completely different world with its own laws, free from the prejudices of city life, the daily grind, and the feeling of constraint. When you hit the road, everything around changes: the views from the truck window, the weather, the people.

Russia's roads stretch 1.1 million kilometers - still not enough for the largest country in the world by area.

Every day, large numbers of people travel along Russia's roads. In Moscow alone, the daily traffic flow consists of 1.5 million cars. Among them are long-distance truckers, for whom the road is work and the truck is home.

Life on the road in Russia is very dangerous. Drivers usually spend the night in guarded parking lots, and if that is not an option, they park close to each other for protection.

Driving a truck is hard work, especially in Russia, where some sections of road are completely unfit for traffic. It's often easier to drive on the shoulder than on the road itself.

Some villages and even towns are either too far out of the way or can only be reached at certain times of the year; for example, when the road is not flooded.

Aleksandr Aksakov

Another challenge is dealing with highway patrol officers. Most truck drivers get into a pickle when trying to pass through a weight checkpoint with an overloaded vehicle. In such case, customers are forced to carry more.

Truckers are legally obliged to rest a certain number of hours each day. But not all approve of the rules: to earn a crust, they have to make as many trips as possible. Although such overnight trips are often the cause of major traffic accidents, many drivers are undeterred.

Drivers encounter hitch-hikers of all ages (15-65), gender, and social status. Hitch-hiker Pyotr and son (pictured). Pyotr is teaching his son to hitch-hike from an early age, but does not let him do it alone. That will happen when he turns 18.
