Scientists have still not found the answer to the question of why salmon return to the place they were born to spawn. Nevertheless, several million red salmon swim to the Kuril Lake every year in order to reach their birthplace to breed and then die near the nest of eggs they've just laid. Each year, these intrepid fish make the long, hard journey from the ocean back home, swimming against the current and overcoming many obstacles. All this to give their lives for the sake of the next generation. Yuzhno-Kamchatsky Wildlife Reserve, Kamchatka Krai.

Before spawning, capelin gather in enormous schools of fish that start to approach the shores. When the wind is strong, the waves throw the spawning capelin onto the shore. The shoreline is sometimes covered for dozens of meters in a layer of capelin that have been tossed out of the water by the surf. Many foxes, hungry after the long winter months, are drawn to this place to feed. Nikolskoye, Kamchatka Krai
