Avacha Bay is large bay that freezes over in the winter. It is one of the largest bays in the world, second only to Australia’s Port Jackson Bay. Avacha Bay is 24 kilometers long.

Avacha Bay also serves at the main transport hub for the Kamchatka Peninsula.

There are many picturesque grottos in the costal cliffs that can only be accessed by narrow one- or two-person boats: sea kayaks.

A sea kayak is unique for its upward-pointing nose and stern. This kind of kayak tends to be long and narrow. Its form makes moving in a straight line easier and provides stability and speed.

Kayaking is also a special kind of philosophy that allows a person to feel the power of water.

This sport traces its beginnings to the Arctic. It is here that Eskimos (the indigenous Northern people who inhabit Candada, the United States, Greenland, as well as Russia’s Chukotka region) have used elongated, fast-moving kayaks to move around since time immemorial.

Mstislav Sokolovsky (pictured) helped to develop kayaking in Kamchatka. He moved here from Moscow. Using his sea kayak, he sailed along Kamchatka’s coasts and travelled around the Kuril Islands (the chain of islands between Kamchatka and the island of Hokkaido, Japan.)

A kayaker in Kamchatka can’t avoid meeting wildlife face-to-face. Birds—such as puffins and several species of seagulls—chose the surrounding cliffs for nesting. However, the water is dominated by seals, sea lions, orcas, and other whales.

People of any sex or age can enjoy kayaking. The best time to do it is from the end of May to October. However, there are daredevils that set off to the sea in their kayaks in April, when the temperature is below freezing and there is still snow.

As a rule, new kayakers who have just picked up their paddles are accompanied by a sailboat that provides security.

Anyone who wants to can learn to ride a kayak in Kamchatka. The KamchatKAyaking Club exists just for this purpose in the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (the administrative center of Kamchatka Krai which is situated on the shores of Avacha Bay).
