An unusual technique, the ability to see the story in everything, an artistic form—these are the components for the success of Mikhail Shemyakin’s new works.

The exhibition is composed of snapshots made by the artist over 12 years. During all those years, Mikhail Shemyakin wandered the streets of Paris and photographed littered paper, trampled leaves, cigarette butts, paint stains, cracks, tree bark, and stains on the walls of buildings.

He searched his shots for fantastic images, themes, and grotesque characters that he drew on matt printouts with pastel and ink. According to the artist, the idea for this projected appeared 30 years ago when he was living in New York.

It was in the streets of New York that Mikhail Shemyakin, Ernst Neizvestny, and Lev Zbarsky took photographs on a film camera of picturesque pieces of peeling pipes, walls, and paint-splattered sidewalks. Shemyakin remembered this experience in France where he now permanently resides.

Mikhail Shemyakin, born in 1943, is a nonconformist artist. During the Soviet period, his exhibitions were shut down, his works of art were confiscated, and Shemyakin himself was forcibly placed in a psychiatric hospital.

He was later expelled from the Soviet Union. He has lived in France and the United States, and he holds an honorary doctorate from the University of San Francisco.

Shemyakin's art is exhibited all over the world; he also works as an artistic director in theatre, ballet and opera. His works have been bought by museums and private collections in the United States, France and other countries.

Mikhail Shemyakin talks about his relationship with Vladimir Putin: "He was astounded by my version of ‘The Nutcracker.’” When he saw that ballet in Moscow, he said: “Make sure to call Valery Gergiev (artistic director of the Mariinsky Theatre), and tell him that President Bush is going to be in St. Petersburg on May 25, 2003.

So Valery re-worked all his schedules and had ‘The Nutcracker’ on. At the end of the show, Mr. Bush was screaming with delight like a kid.

Vladimir Putin introduced me to Mr. Bush, who kept slapping me on the back and saying, “Great man, great show.” And then President Putin told Mr. Bush: “He is one of yours, and he is one of ours as well. That’s what real friendship is.”

Mikhail also speaks about modern Russia: "I am getting a little nervous about all these rallies, with protesters carrying holy banners and calling for the government to ban all kinds of things. There is no point fighting homosexuals with religious banners or placards… Making great films, creating great art—that's the proper way to express one’s ideas."
