Since most jobs are concentrated inside the Moscow Ring Road (MKAD), the majority of people have no option but to travel to Moscow every day by train.

More than half a million people use suburban trains to make the daily journey, which takes on average three hours, about half of which time is spent on board the train. When totaled up, it turns out that the typical resident of Moscow region spends an average of 30 days, i.e. one month a year, on public transport. Hence, suburban trains are an important part of everyday life for many people around the capital.

Due to the cramped conditions and lack of air inside the compartments, the gangways between cars are also crammed full. About 30 people squeeze into the vestibules in rush hour.

A farebeater sneaks through the barrier at a rail station. Some suburban rail stations have been turned into outposts with spiked fences wrapped in barbwire and smeared with something that leaves a stain. But even that does not deter some passengers, so the fences are sometimes guarded by Russian Railways security staff, who are always ready to drive off would-be deadheads.
