Around 4,300 people celebrated their city's 310th birthday by setting a record. They sang for a whole hour in front of St. Isaac's Cathedral and became the largest choir.

Singers of all ages and experience took part in the event, singing 14 patriotic songs. The event was one of many to observe the Saint Petersburg's anniversary.

Numerous parades took place this day. The loudest one was on the main street of the city, Nevsky Prospect. Dozens of orchestras marched along the avenue celebrating the city's birthday.

There was also a parade of machines. Trams of different ages hit the roads of Saint Petersburg.

The city was founded in 1703 by Russian Emperor Peter the Great. At first it was a fortress, soon it was used as a major sea port of Russian Empire, mainly for this reason it was called a "window to Europe".

The importance of the city could not be underestimated, so it became the capital of the country. It was the capital from 1713 to 1728 and from 1732 to 1918, when the Soviets came to power.

In 1918 the capital of the state was returned back to Moscow and Saint Petersburg was officially called Leningrad in honor of Vladimir Lenin.

Before that, during the First World War, the city was called Petrograd, because the old name sounded like German. In 1991, when the Soviet Union came to an end, the city got its first name, Saint Petersburg.

Saint Petersburg is also called "A Northern Venice". Like Venice the city is divided up among numerous islands by 86 canals and rivers. In 19th century there were around 150 islands, nowadays there are less than 50 islands.

Over 580 bridges connect these islands, including those crossing the Neva river. The Alexander Nevsky Bridge is the longest one (905,7 metres), the widest bridge is almost 100 meters wide, it is the Blue Bridge across the Moika River.
