370 km to the northeast of Moscow, in the Privolzhsky district of the Ivanovo region, on the banks of the Volga River lies Plyos. This town was founded in the 9th century and was originally called Chuvil, which meant ‘a small bird’. The town received its modern name around 1410, after Batu Khan (grandson of Genghis Khan) invaded Rus.

You can get to Plyos from Moscow by car along the Gorkovskoye Highway (about 5 hours); the Moscow-Ivanovo train, then a bus to Plyos; by bus from Shchelkovskaya Metro Station; or, by boat from Rechnoy Vokzal.

Plyos’ coast is 3-km long. Cafes line the entire length of it, offering a place to try Volga fish and local liqueurs.

The Volga is 700 meters-wide at Plyos and the channel is 15 meters deep.

There are several equipped beaches inside city limits. Outside city limits, you can stay in tents just right on the Volga’s shore.

Professional travelers can be seen around Plyos in the summertime. They’re getting their trimarans ready for yet another expedition to the Arctic Ocean. While they’re still in Plyos, you can bargain with them to take you for a spin along the Volga on their trimaran for a small fee.

While in Plyos, you can stay in hotels and guest houses, or rent a house from nearly any resident of Plyos.

Ever since the end of the 19th century, Plyos has been considered a summer resort. Members of the artistic intelligentsia of that time enjoyed relaxing here. The singer Fyodor Shalyapin and artists like Ilya Repin, Aleksei Savrasov, Isaac Levitan, and others, were among those who visited Plyos.
