The mining takes place on the coast of the Baltic Sea near the village of Yantarny (Russian for ‘Amber’). Experts estimate that 90% of the world’s amber succinate reserves is concentrated here. The mineral is approximately 50 million years old.

The reason for color variations is usually explained by various splotches, like, for example, those caused by algae that give the amber a greenish hue. If a lot of air bubbles were frozen in the gem, it turns a white foamy color. Some minerals can even give amber a certain silver tint.
