Bergul village near Novosibirsk is on the edge of swamps and off-road terrain in the southwest part of Siberia. It's here that the Feyodesev Old Believers have lived for over century.

This direction of Russian Old Believers started at the turn of the 18th century near Novgorod. Feyodesev believers, like other Old Believers rejected the church reform adapted by Patriarch Nikon and Czar Aleksey in the 1650s to 1661 that aimed to unify the Russian Orthodox Church's worship with the Greek and Byzantine Orthodox Churches.

The Feyodesevs differed in their rejection of government and their strict asceticism. They considered the idea of continuing mankind to be sinful and believed that the reign of the Anti-Christ had started.

In order to keep their faith and culture, Old Believers were forced to leave their homes. They wandered for another 200 years.

In 1903, they arrived in Siberia to tame the far-away and inhospitable region. They cut down ancient trees right on the site. As a result, four villages were founded: Bergul, Platonovka, Makarovka, and Morozovka.

But even in their remoteness, the Old Believers were unable to escape the changes of the 1930s that affected the entire Soviet Union that rejected religion. Atheistic propaganda was accompanied by mass arrests and religious persecution.

The old world came to an end. The church in Bergul was closed, the religious leader sent to prison, and all religious icons were confiscated.

But people were able to maintain their usual religious lifestyle while adjusting to the requirements of modernity.

The older community observed all religious rules, though these rules were not taught to their children.

The children were not taught prayers, but were taught to live by God's laws: the concept of sin was passed down to the youth. What was good or bad was judged from the perspective of faith and Orthodox norms.

At the same time, Bazhov's tales were read with joy, remembering full well that the famous fablist had left his mark in Bergul, becoming the first local teacher. At music lessons, children sang original and folk songs that reflected Soviet reality.

Today's generation of Old Believers has kept their customs, mores, and faith, strictly adhering to the testament: "we shall live as did our forefathers."

To this day, Old Believers celebrate major Orthodox holidays like Christmas and Easter. Baptism also remains. Babies are baptized in both the summer and winter, being dipped in cold water brought from the stream.

Two worlds collide here: the modern and the patriarchal. They collide and, as strange as it may seem, they coexist.
