High-flying air balloons have been known to mankind for going on 230 years. If all kinds of mechanisms and designs have fundamentally changed over the centuries-long technological evolution, the air balloon has remained the same in its essence and its construction. The most portentous year in aeronautics is 1783, the year when two brave Frenchmen, Jean-François Pilatre de Rozier and François Laurent, the Marquis d’Arlandes, completed the first air ballooning flight in history in a balloon designed by the Montgolfier brothers.

Fourteen years later, on October 22, 1797, Garnerin was the first man to jump from an air balloon with a parachute, jumping from a height of almost 1 km over the Parisian park of Monceau. That was 216 years ago.

The Russian city of Velikiye Luki, located 471 kilometers from Moscow, hosts the annual International Balloon Meet for aeronauts where launches and competitions take place. The international meet and conference last took place June 8-16, 2013.
