Tarusa is a small provincial town on the banks of the River Oka, 140 kilometres from Moscow. It looks as if it was preserved a couple of centuries ago. A perfect place to take a break "au naturelle", but definitely "a la Russe".

The name of the town comes from the Taruska River, which merges with the Oka at this exact point.

As 200 years ago, the streets today boast the same two-storey merchant houses, surrounded by potato patches and tulip beds. Pompous splendor is considered bad form here.

Russia's future "principal poetess", Marina Tsvetaeva, who spent all her childhood in Tarusa longed for this place until her dying day. "I would like to be laid to rest at Tarusa Cemetery, under the elder-berry bush, where the local strawberries grow redder and larger than anywhere else, she wrote. - But if that is wishful thinking, then on one of those hills over there... with a stone inscription: "The desired resting place of Marina Tsvetaeva", she wrote from exile in Paris. Such a stone was indeed placed on the Tarusa hillside in 1988.

Eighteen years later, a monument by sculptor Boris Messerer was erected to the great poetess in the town park.

Konstantin Paustovsky, a Soviet writer and honorary citizen of Tarusa, described the locality: "Perhaps nowhere else in the vicinity of Moscow can rival these parts for the quintessential Russianness of the landscape.

All the refinement of the Bay of Naples with its feast of colors would I gladly give for the wet willow shrub on the sandy banks of the Oka or the meandering Taruska rivulet."

Take a stroll down Schmidt Street and your gaze will be met by the private museum of Sergei Zharov. This local artist creates original sculptures and interior design objects from old engines, gears, and exhaust pipes.

An operator seat for a Singer sewing machine and lamps made of faucets fill the unusual house, which, among other things, contains a collection of antique irons and gramophone recordings of romances by Chaliapin.

The Oka becomes truly navigable from June 1 onwards. Boats ply the water to and fro, while children ride on "bananas" and parents on "floating cafes." Almost everyone takes a dip, although the water in the Oka is more beautiful than it is clean.

The manor estate at Polenovo on the other bank of the River Oka, close to the village of Bekhovo is worth visiting, if only for the lush beauty of the river views. The estate was laid out personally by the renowned Russian painter Vassily Polenov, to inspire his future landscapes.

If you make it to Polenovo, you should definitely take a walk along the banks of the Oka to the neighbouring village of Bekhovo. There is the toy-like Trinity Church - built to designs made by the artist.

If you time your visit for the week after Easter, an old Russian tradition permits you to ring the church-bells. But don't forget to look around as you do - the view of the river from the bell-tower will take your breath away and inspire your soul.

Russians love Tarusa for the herb-laden air; for the poetic atmosphere of a bygone era; for the peerless sunsets. In the evening, when the sun sinks into the Oka, swarms of may-bugs circle above the river and the banks are bestrewn with local fishermen.

Elena Potapova
