In December 2002 Hans Göran Persson, Prime Minister of Sweden, filed for divorce from his wife Annika, and the divorce proceedings were completed in April 2003. The reason for their parting was not stated. The couple had been married for a little less than eight years. They did not have any children together.

In October 2007 Nicolas Sarkozy, President of France, officially dissolved his marriage to his wife Cécilia. The couple parted “by mutual consent” after 11 years together. Sarkozy had stopped appearing in public with his wife in May 2005, when he assumed the post of France’s Minister of the Interior.

In May 2009 the Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi’s wife Veronica announced her decision to divorce her husband. The reason was acts of unfaithfulness on his part – reports had appeared in the media about the prime minister’s liaison with the 18-year-old model Naomi Letizia. The divorce was finalised in 2012.

Sandra Torres wanted to run for president, but the Guatemalan Constitution forbids members of the current head of state’s family or close relatives from standing for this post. The divorce was officially finalised, but the court still did not allow her to run for office.
