The Siberian Aeronautical Research Institute named after S. A. Chaplygin (SibNIA) is the largest aviation research center in the east of Russia, located in Novosibirsk. Its mission is to conduct research and tests in the field of aerodynamics, structural robustness, and flight testing aircraft.

The institute’s laboratories have developed components for landmark planes, such as the An-2, A-57, Su-26, and Su-27 airplanes. They have also tested over 200 various types of aircraft, including the commercial supersonic Tu-144 passenger jet, the Buran spacecraft, the Tu-204, and the Su-27 series of planes. In addition, the laboratories have tested the landing devices for more than 250 aircraft manufactured and produced in Russia.

The institute is currently working on testing the fifth generation model of the T-50 airplane and the short and mid-range MS-21 passenger plane.

In this section of the institute, work is underway to create and develop the SSJ-100 regional aircraft. The Sukhoi Superjet 100, its full name, is a Russian short-range passenger plane developed jointly by Sukhoi Civil Aircraft and foreign corporations.

The Buran spacecraft’s vertical stabilizer. SibNIA developed the technology that helped heat and cool the construction to the necessary temperatures. Buran’s thermal cabin can withstand temperatures of up to 1200 degrees Celsius (nearly 2200 degrees Fahrenheit).

Structural and endurance tests for full-scale aircraft structures are conducted here. The section is 35 meters high. The carrier’s ceiling beams bear a load of 100 tons per square meter.

As such, one of the institute’s biggest tasks is creating a passenger plane that meets modern society’s needs (affordability, fuel economy, noise reduction, and ecologically-clean operation).
