You might think that winter means lots of warm clothes, ergo heavy rucksacks all around. But no, backpacks contain only light bulky items, while heavier things are carried in special sleds. They attach to backpacks by means of a rope and glide effortlessly over the snow, so that the weight becomes almost unnoticeable. Tourists call them "bugs" — like obedient dogs, they amble along behind, but on descents and ascents they can show character.

As a result, the forest becomes fabulously white.

A sure-fire way to get warm even in deep-freeze conditions is to be active. Norwegian traveler and explorer Amundsen wrote that the only way to warm the body is to "keep moving."

An entire science lies behind winter hiking. How can one survive a week or two without hot water and heating? Tourists have it all worked out. In wintertime, there's one big tent for the whole group (8-12 people). Inside, a special camp stove is set up, providing so much heat that even in bitterly cold conditions inside the tent all you need is a sweater. Food is usually prepared over a campfire in a specially flattened pot.

In winter, the mildest climatic conditions are to be found in the Southern Urals, but even so be prepared for temperatures of -45°C and snowfalls that cut off all transport links.
