Alexander Kaptarenko was born in St Petersburg a few months before the sinking of the Titanic, during the reign of Nicholas II.

He lost his mother at an early age after she caught hypothermia during one of the worst floods in the city’s history, forcing her to wade waist-deep in icy water to get home. His father died later during the Blockade of Leningrad.
