The Zimnegorskaya weather station is located 1355 km north of Moscow on Cape Zimnegorsky more than one hundred meters high on the indigenous shore of the White Sea. There are no roads. You can get here only by sea, helicopter, or on foot along the coast. In the past there was a lighthouse and a military unit here. The lighthouse is still here, but hasn’t worked in a long time.

The White Sea (before the 17th century, known as Studyony, Sovoletsky, Northern, Calm, and the White Gulf) is a sea in the north of the European part of Russia. It belongs to the Arctic Ocean. In Scandinavian mythology, the White Sea is known by the name “Gandvik”; it’s also known as the Bay of Serpents due to its winding shoreline.

Weather station employees, Volodya (in front of telephone) and Valera. Usually three people work at such stations, but it’s “not working out” with a third person lately; they don’t last long. So duty for these two is once every other day.

Valera Lisetsky and Volodya Sharonov take readings from the area every three hours, after which they hand over the data to Arkhangelsk by telephone. Arkhangelsk (120 km from the station) is the closest city to the station.

Volodya Sharonov, weather station employee, lived in Astrakhan in his “past life”. He’s already been at the Zimnegorskaya station for more than 10 years.

An old telephone on the desk in the weather station. A few years ago, the connection was bad and it was possible to work only with slower rotary phones. These days, a new telephone with buttons is used and data is sent to the main hydrometeorological service administration by satellite.

Going out to pick mushrooms between shifts is common. The woods are literally right outside the window. It is one of the few activities that is possible there.

The Zimnegorskaya weather station is one of the oldest in the Russian north - in April it was 125 years since the first hydrometeorological observations were made at the Zimnegorsky Lighthouse.

The story of two men living at the isolated meteorological station on an Arctic island was interpreted in the recent Russian film "How I Ended This Summer". The film was directed by Alexei Popogrebsky and nominated for the Golden Bear at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival.
