The average lifespan for a Russian woman is 73, while that number stands at 60 for the average Russian man. Currently, one in eight Russian citizens — 12.8 per cent — is aged 65 or older. In this age group, there are more than two women for every man.

Marina Boyanova, 39, is a homemaker who enjoys planting flowers. She studied to be a physical education teacher. Her husband of 19 years, Eduard, is 40 years old. They have three children: Gleb, German, and Veronika.

According to the Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat), women outnumber men in Russia by 16.2 percent. Although there are nearly equal numbers of girls and boys born in Russia, the country has a high rate of premature deaths among men.

Dasha Morozova, 31, enjoys scrapbooking and sports. She works as a water aerobics instructor. She graduated from college, the Institute for Social and Cultural Services and Tourism. Her husband of four years, Sergey, is 33. Together they have one son, Misha, or Mikhail.

Olga Medvedeva, 45, loves cooking and going for walks. Her husband of 20 years, Gennady, is 47. They have three children: Anastasia, Stanislav, and Irina. She works as a salesperson in the meat department of a shop. She has a high school education.

Lyudmila Gorokhova, 33, loves listening to music and works as tutor at a kindergarten. She has a high school diploma, specializing as tailor of women’s dresses. Her husband of 16 years, Viktor, is 39. They have three boys: Sergey, Maxim, and Vladimir.

柳德米拉·戈罗霍娃，33岁，喜欢听音乐，职业是幼儿园辅导教师。她同样是高中文凭，专业是女装缝纫。其旁站着和她结婚16年的丈夫维克多，39岁。他们有三个儿子：谢尔盖、马克西姆和弗拉基米尔。
"Since olden times, women have been the guardians of the hearth and center of the family. Women assume a multitude of roles, those of mother, wife, lady of the house, daughter, nurturer, and lover,” Olga explains.
