For the most part, seal pups are washed up on the shore due to storms and the lack of large ice floes where adult specimens usually build shelter.

Two zoologists, Vyacheslav and Elena, gather the pinnipeds. Then, after several months of rehabilitation, they re-release them into their natural habitat.

There are currently 12 inhabitants at the rehabilitation center.

There are seals hanging on to their lives who arrive to the station weighing less than their birth weight. Here they are fed, washed five to six times a day, and given medical treatment.

Older seals are given fish fat, mince meat, and solutions to restore their water balance.

The project started working a year ago at a treatment facilities center in Repino (a small town 45 kilometers from Saint Petersburg). The Saint Petersburg Waste Water Treatment Center provided great opportunities to work towards rehabilitating seals: the treatment facilities house quarantine wards for animals that are brought in, an animal feed preparation center, and a pool for grown patients.

Before the Waste Water Treatment Center provided zoologists Vyacheslav and Elena a place to work, they took care of seals in their friends’ apartments, at the dolphinarium, the zoo, a ski base, and other places where they were able to create suitable conditions for the animals.

This young female seal is almost ready for release. It was suddenly separated from its mother by a storm on March 14, 2014, and got lost: it crawled on ice floes and wailed.

Russian EMERCOM operatives took it to shore and the rehabilitation center decided to keep it just in case.

In the winter, seals have to sit in a snow shelter away from predators, precipitation, and the wind for almost two months. Unfortunately, these conditions are hard to come by now as the ice disappears in all parts of the gulf by the end of March.

It is probable that most young seals will die this year. The decrease in their population is cause for great concern among experts.
