The first mention of the Cossack town of Vyoshki appeared in 1672. During the Russian Civil War, the village served as the center of the Upper Don uprising against Bolshevik power.

Vyoshenskaya received world-wide fame thanks to Mikhail Sholokhov, one of the village’s residents, who wrote the novel “And Quiet Flows the Don”, which won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1965.

In the autumn of 1926, Mikhail Sholokhov moved with his family to the village of Vyoshenskaya, his new permanent place of residence. In 1928, he purchased a home and estate on Sovetskaya street, where the Sholokhovs lived until 1935.

This is where Mr. Sholokhov wrote the third book of the novel “And Quiet Flows the Don” and the first book of his novel, “Virgin Soil Unturned”. He also worked on articles and essays.

After the writer’s death in 1984, the State M. A. Sholokhov Museum Reserve was created here. In 1984, when everything literally started from a clean slate, the fact that the development strategy was so well-conceived, considering long-term perspectives, played a large role.

The museum was conceived as more than just a memorial to the great writer; it was an integrated historical, cultural and landscape complex. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that, beyond preserving everything connected with the Sholokhov’s life and art (personal belongings, manuscripts, the houses in which he lived), it also preserves valuable natural objects and historic fragments of the Cossack way of life, characteristic of the Upper Don.

"We tell the story of the writer through the medium of his life. We offer visitors the opportunity to “re-read” Sholokhov by walking the roads his characters walked, breathing in the air of the steppe, and imagining themselves in the role of the daring horsemen or grain growers,” recounts Alexander Sholokhov, the museum’s director and the writer's grandson.

"The Sholokhovsky region itself serves as an illustration of the writer’s works and continues to live and give birth to new plots. It is a novel under the open skies. That is precisely how we image the essence of our work."

Over the last 25 years, the M. A. Sholokhov Museum Reserve has become a notable presence in Russia’s cultural life and one of the most dynamically-developing young museums of Europe.

Since 1985, “Sholokhov Spring”, an international literary and folklore festival, takes place annually in the village of Vyoshenakaya

The complex occupies 40 hectares (98 acres), which for a regular museum is a rare luxury.
