Yesterday Cutlog New York, the French fair’s first States-side outing announced that Russian street artist Timofey Radya from Yekaterinburg had been awarded the first Cutlog NY Artist Prize for his sculpture “Figure #1: Stability”, a huge pyramid made of police riot shields.

"Outside, a monolothic pyramid of used riot shields by the Russian Timofey Radya literally and figuratively towered above a handful of other sculptural offerings. Despite some shortcomings, it’s a fresh, international perspective that feels spirited, even possibly passing for countercultural at a time when the headline fairs mature into mass-market, corporate affairs," says hyperallergic.com art blog.

In Russia his pieces of street art became recognizable in the recent years. Radya finished the faculty of philosophy, so all his project are not just provocative gestures, but meaningful messages, concerning the most complex universal questions. One of his works is devoted to the problem of memory.

The memory of the victory in the Second World War expels the memory of the terrific beginning of war. Most of people heartily celebrate the Victory Day, but don't remember these young soldiers that passed away during the first years of war. How fiercely were they fighting, literally putting their faces in fire?

This hospital (now abandoned) used to take the injured soldiers during the years of war. On the wall there are faces of six soldiers from Ural. These portraits were created by an open flame set on a fabric of bandage. The faces were burnt; soon rain will wash them off. Timofey comes to a metaphorical conclusion: actually, the eternal fire (as a symbol of memory) lasts only a few minutes.

Timofey Radya also dedicated a few works to the literature. "I am into Brodsky these days. How did he manage to write - how could he manage to fit it all? When I’m repeating his words a desire rises inside me to lie down in the river, in the water, under the water, under the river – under the earth," he says.

Radya confesses that he has a permanent "desire to get into the page, underneath the line, between the letters…" The artist compares Brodsky's lyrics to the water. "The water belongs to the whole world, the image of water is everywhere." Water is in every town, in every cup, everywhere – and so are Brodsky's words. His poems are cold as frozen water, but the world around is much colder, according to the artist's vision.

Another project that involves books may be considered as a replication of Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451. "I think that burning of books is one of the darkest sides of human nature. Probably because of the heat the books keep inside."

"Despite the fact that we are talking about the world of things it's as horrible as burning something alive," - thinks Timofey. "Books give the light. The hatred that one should be feeling while burning the books is more than just hatred." For him it's like the love of death.

The words disappear but the energy buried within books remains. It remains on the wall creating a new message: "Let everyone hear my silence." The project has one speciality that can't be proved with a photo – it's a smell. "If you stand near the wall for a long time you start feeling sick," - claims Timofey.
