In 1670-75 a small settlement sprang up at the mouth of the Darya river that later spawned the factory town of Demidovaya Utka (as Staroutkinsk was previously called).

Now his life is spent reminiscing, tending to vegetables, and paying walking visits to former colleagues, who live 7 km from Garipovka.

But he has no desire to move closer to family and friends: “This is where I was born and where I’ll die. Garipovka’s my motherland. Without me it simply won’t exist.”

Unfortunately, given the pace of urban agglomeration these days, "one-person villages" are not altogether uncommon.
