Most of the scientific programme consists of biomedical and biological experiments. The study of how plants behave in conditions of weightlessness is essential for future flights into deep space and to other planets. On new spacecraft, plants will be one of the most important components of the life-support systems.

The ISS is currently being expanded. The new MIM-2 scientific module docked with the station recently. Another two new modules will appear soon. This will enable the Russian scientific research programme on the station to expand and develop.

This is how Maxim explains why he decided to write a blog: “I noticed that most Russian children know what the Shuttle spacecraft is, but not many of them know about Gagarin or the Soyuz spacecraft. This is really how things stand: not many people are up to date with what’s happening in space, how the cosmonauts are working, and what research programmes are going on.”

Maxim Suraev / Roscosmos

There are four icons in the Russian orbital segment. There’s also a Gospel and a large cross. The cross was given to the Russian Federal Space Agency management by Patriarch Alexy II himself. The crew of Soyuz TMA-8 brought the cross to the space station in 2006.

Even a simple ritual such as a morning wash is different here. There’s one glass of water for everyone to wash with and brush their teeth. It’s the same with washing your hair – you have to rub the water on your hair. Shaving is almost the same. You apply foam and then shave off unwanted hair.

Maxim Surayev is not just a popular blogger: he’s also a TV journalist. He films episodes of a popular science programme for one of the Russian TV channels – right here on board the ISS.

One example of life in conditions of weightlessness – this is how cosmonauts sleep.

Roman Romanenko is one of Maxim Surayev’s best friends. “Romka and I got to know each other a long time ago, when we became cosmonauts together. We were in the same intake, and we’ve been cosmonauts for more than 12 years.”Romanenko, by the way, is the son of a cosmonaut – one example of Russia’s space dynasties.

Maxim Surayev holds the honorary titles of Pilot-Cosmonaut of the Russian Federation and Hero of the Russian Federation. Aged 42, he’s a colonel in the Russian Air Force and was the first Russian cosmonaut to write a blog during a space flight. Wired magazine rated Surayev’s blog the most interesting and entertaining “space” blog of all.

Space is an extremely hostile environment for humans. Nothing on Earth can match the combination of adverse factors found in space, except perhaps uncontrolled fire. The space flight effectively takes place in a total vacuum, in weightlessness, with very big drops in temperature, and exposed to ionising radiation. But even in these conditions, humans have learned not just to survive, but also to do productive work.

Maxim Suraev / Roscosmos

The Americans currently have what the Russians lack, and the Russians have what the Americans lack. For example, only Russia could rescue the station’s international crew in the event of an unplanned evacuation, using its Soyuz spacecraft.

Russia is one of the few countries to have people constantly in orbit around the Earth. In the Russian orbital segment of the International Space Station (ISS) the crew are at work all the time. For the time being there is a crew of two cosmonauts, but in future there will be three. The Russians meet the American astronauts on the station about three or four times a day.

Maxim Suraev / Roscosmos

The station runs on a minute-by-minute schedule. Every morning the cosmonauts take medical tests. They have to do physical workouts every day to keep themselves in condition.

Maxim Suraev / Roscosmos

Maxim describes his life in space with unfailing humour: “Can you see how in conditions of weightlessness everything flies? Food, spoons, and me.”

Maxim Suraev / Roscosmos

What kind of photographic equipment do they use on the station? All the stills and video cameras here are professional. There are lots of lenses: for panoramic shots, night photography, internal shots and macrophotography: about fifteen of them in all. In a word, the range of stills and video photographic equipment covers everything you could need.

Maxim Suraev / Roscosmos

Here’s an example of the work done by the Americans on board the Space Shuttle Endeavour. The shuttle crew worked excellently, doing three spacewalks. This shuttle delivered a new module for the American orbital segment.
